Barn cats

A barn has to have cats.

What's he doing out there?

I don't know how many cats are around the barn. They're usually very busy.

zzzzzzz....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...zzzz....

I've actually seen 8 or 10 of these cats, sitting in a line, all of their heads rotating in unison as they watched a mouse scramble across the alley.

On another occasion we had a feral cat in the barn catch a mouse. And they all gathered in a circle and stared. This poor cat layed down flat, growled and swallowed that whole mouse in one gulp.

And then there's this tough guy.

Been hanging around the barn for *years*. We finally gave up trying to catch him. This cat just amazes me. First seen maybe 3 or 4 years ago, see him hunting all the time and seen him snatch up little rodents and baby rabbits who knows how many times. You can plainly see he's not missing many meals.

Life is good for a barn cat. Mostly short. But good.

  2. My handsome boy loves the two barn cats we have and they seem to love him. They will sit window ledge in his stall, and he will nibble and rub them and they will allow him to. In return for the grooming, they leave dead mice on the ledge for him. Fortunately, he's not interested them but it makes for a gruesome find for me. :-)
